The Chrono-Gardener's Harvest
Episode 3: The Anachronistic Bloom
Returning to his greenhouse at dusk, Julian discovered an extraordinary anomaly blooming in bed three overnight. A magnificent silver lotus flower had sprouted from soil that had been dormant for over a century. The lotus petals glowed with a soft, pulsing light that projected clear holographic memories into the air. Julian approached the flower, watching as the holograms depicted the founding of Chronos Hill by his grandfather. In the vision, his grandfather buried a master temporal core beneath the central terrace to protect the land. Julian realized that the clockwork vines weren’t just stealing crops; they were trying to locate this buried core. He grabbed a sturdy iron shovel from the tool shed and hurried toward the central terrace lawn. As he began digging into the ancient turf, his shovel struck something hard with a metallic clang. Clearing away the dirt, he uncovered a heavy brass chest sealed with a complex chronological combination lock. The combination required three numbers corresponding to the dates of past, present, and future equinoxes. Julian calculated the numbers rapidly using his astronomical charts and dialed the tumblers into place. The chest popped open with a satisfying click, revealing the glowing master temporal core inside.
Roots in Reverse
As Julian lifted the glowing master temporal core from the chest, the surrounding garden began to shift. Time in the immediate vicinity reversed by ten minutes, undoing the mess left by the syndicate intruders earlier. The shrivelled apple trees in the orchard sprang back to life, regaining their lush leaves and blossoms. Julian secured the core inside a lead-lined transport case, knowing it must be safely hidden before morning. Suddenly, the greenhouse doors burst open, and Baron Vance strode in flanked by armed syndicate enforcers. “Hand over the core, Julian, and we might let you keep tending your little tomato plants,” Vance sneered. Julian stood his ground, resting his hand on his trusty brass pruning shears tucked into his belt holster. “You’ll never control the timeline, Vance; the land rejects your corporate greed,” Julian replied defiantly. Vance gestured to his enforcers, who raised their chronoton rifles and advanced slowly across the tile floor. Julian didn’t hesitate; he pulled a flash-seed from his pocket and crushed it against the stone floor. A blinding flash of pure temporal light filled the greenhouse, temporarily blinding the armed enforcers. Seizing the moment, Julian sprinted through the side exit into the misty orchards lining the hillside.
