Episode 2: The Honest Shower

Elena climbed down the rusted metal ladder into the subterranean drainage chamber to examine the weather machine. The machine was a complex assembly of copper coils, vacuum tubes, and a central crystal condenser drum. She opened the maintenance panel, exposing the wiring diagram etched onto a brass plaque inside the door. The plaque bore the official seal of Magistrate Alistair, the head of the city’s agricultural council. Alistair was using the machine to trigger artificial droughts in rival farming districts while hoarding water supplies. Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed on the ladder above, followed by the beam of a flashlight sweeping the room. “Step away from the console, collector; you’re trespassing in a restricted meteorological zone,” a voice ordered. Elena spun around, recognizing the voice of Captain Vance of the city guard, Alistair’s chief enforcer. She grabbed a data cylinder containing the machine’s operation logs right out of the central processing slot. Vance drew his service pistol, stepping down off the bottom rung of the ladder to block her exit. “Hand over the cylinder, Elena, or you’ll be answering for industrial sabotage before the magistrate,” Vance threatened. Elena didn’t hesitate; she smashed a glass vial of reactive catalyst onto the floor between them.

Collecting the Storm

A dense cloud of billowing white steam erupted from the broken catalyst vial, blinding Captain Vance instantly. Elena used the distraction to scramble up the iron ladder, bursting out through the drainage grate into the rain. She sprinted through the ruins of the mill, hearing Vance’s angry shouts fading behind her in the downpour. Reaching her cottage, she locked the heavy wooden door and bolted the shutters against the howling storm outside. She placed the stolen data cylinder into her analysis terminal, watching the screen load the complete operation files. The files confirmed that Alistair planned to trigger an artificial acid storm tomorrow to destroy the independent farms. This would force all local growers to sign monopolistic supply contracts with the magistrate’s trading syndicate. Elena knew she had to expose the plot to the public before the morning trading bell rang in town. She pulled out her emergency broadcast transmitter, preparing to send the data logs to every household receiver. Suddenly, her cottage lights flickered and died as the municipal power grid was cut from the outside.
