The Coordinate
Episode 4: Relics of Radio
Panic flashing through his chest, Silas scrambled to pack the acetate negatives and the glowing vacuum tube back into the metal capsule, securing the brass cap with frantic twists. He killed his headlamp, plunging the bunker into absolute darkness save for the faint amber glow of the analog amplifiers along the wall. He ducked behind a towering rack of decommissioned electronic gear just as a beam of bright white light cut down through the vertical access shaft. A pair of heavy boots descended the ladder, hitting the concrete floor with a decisive thud that echoed off the metal walls. The intruder swept a tactical flashlight across the room, illuminating the empty workbench, the open capsule casing, and the still-warm switchboard console. Silas held his breath, pressing his back flat against the cold concrete wall as the flashlight beam swept back and forth across his hiding place. The intruder muttered an oath, pulling a portable radio from their tactical vest to report that the cache had been recently disturbed and the primary data capsule was missing.
The Edge of Town
Waiting until the intruder climbed back up the ladder to coordinate an exterior search party, Silas slipped out from behind the equipment rack and scrambled up the vertical rungs. He emerged into the cool night air of the forest clearing, keeping low beneath the shadow of the pine canopy as he sprinted toward the overgrown logging trail. The forest was dead silent, the moonlight filtering through the dense branches in silver shafts that illuminated his path down the mountain slope. He ran for over a mile until his lungs burned and his legs ached from exhaustion, finally reaching his parked Land Rover hidden off a gravel fire road. Tossing his backpack and the metal capsule onto the passenger seat, he turned the ignition key and sped down the winding mountain road toward the safety of Whispering Pines. Through the rearview mirror, he caught a fleeting glimpse of two dark utility vehicles speeding along the ridge road above him, their headlights sweeping the tree line in search of the fugitive cartographer. Silas pressed his foot down on the accelerator, knowing he had captured evidence that powerful government contractors would kill to keep buried in the dirt.
