Episode 3: Midnight Crossings

Standing stranded in the misty void, Julian watched as dozens of spectral figures emerged from the fog on either side of him, all of them walking with slow, mechanical precision across the invisible span. The figures were dressed in antique traveler attire from different centuries—some wearing nineteenth-century wool coats, others in medieval leather tunics, and a few clad in modern mountaineering gear. They ignored him completely, their eyes fixed straight ahead as they crossed the nonexistent bridge from nowhere to nowhere. Among the procession, Julian spotted a figure wearing his exact jacket and carrying his identical field pack, walking with its head bowed down in exhaustion.

 Muddy Trails

Julian stepped into the line of travelers, falling into step behind the figure that wore his jacket, hoping the procession would lead him back to solid ground. The mud beneath his boots grew deeper and stickier with every step, sucking at his ankles like quicksand and threatening to pull him down into the grey earth. The whispering voices of the travelers rose in a low, continuous murmur, reciting geographical coordinates, dates of disappearance, and fragments of old mapping journals. Julian recognized several of the names being spoken—they were missing geologists and surveyors who had vanished in the Mistveil region over the past fifty years without a single trace ever being recovered.
