The Bridge of Footprints
Episode 5: Following the Path
Julian scrambled up the embankment and burst into the research camp, slamming the heavy wooden door of his cabin behind him and bolting the lock. He stripped off his rain-soaked jacket, shivering violently as he poured himself a cup of hot coffee from the camp stove. Looking out the cabin window toward the ravine, he saw the footbridge standing quietly in the moonlight, perfectly dry and pristine, as if nothing unusual had ever occurred. Yet, as he looked down at the wooden floorboards of his cabin, a fresh set of wet, oily footprints was slowly marching across the rug toward his desk, stopping right beside his survey maps.
The Final Footstep
Weeks later, after the research camp had been permanently closed and abandoned due to geological instability, municipal rescue teams combed the Mistveil Ravine for missing personnel. They found Julian Vance’s field pack resting neatly on the center stone paver of the footbridge, surrounded by a neat circle of dry mud. Inside the pack lay his journal, opened to a final, unfinished entry describing the sensation of cold water rising around his ankles. The rescue workers found no other trace of Julian Vance, though local hikers reported seeing a lone figure standing motionless on the bridge every rainy night, watching the dark water rise below.
