The Door That Opened Inward
Episode 3: Bound Volumes
In the center of a circular reading room lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, Julian found a massive leather-bound ledger resting upon a marble reading stand. He approached the volume and opened its heavy cover, discovering that the pages were filled with detailed, room-by-room descriptions of his own life, tracking his movements from childhood up to his current entrapment in the library. The final entry on the open page described his exact thoughts, heart rate, and emotional state at that very second, written in a cramped, archaic script that used his personal handwriting style.
The Unknown Language
As Julian turned to the next page of the ledger, the text shifted from English into a complex, geometric hieroglyphic language that burned his eyes with a pale, phosphorescent light when he tried to read it. The books on the surrounding shelves began to rattle and slide out of their slots on their own, raining down upon the parquet floor in a cascading avalanche of tumbling volumes. The room began to rotate slowly, the walls peeling away to reveal thousands of grey doors spinning in a dizzying carousel of infinite exits and entrances.
