The Door That Opened Inward
Episode 5: The Vanishing Shelf
Julian gathered his reference notes, grabbed his briefcase, and hurried toward the primary elevator bank, eager to leave the basement stacks behind forever. As the elevator doors slid open, he glanced back down the aisle one final time to check the location of the grey service door. The corner of the aisle where the door had stood was completely empty, occupied only by a standard steel shelving unit bolted permanently into the concrete wall, showing no trace of wood, paint, or latch.
Empty Wall
Weeks later, after his manuscript on Gothic interior design was successfully completed and published, Julian returned to the university library to verify his research notes. He took the elevator down to the third sub-level and walked to the exact aisle where the service door had appeared, checking the wall against his original architectural blueprints. The wall was solid reinforced concrete, smooth and unblemished, save for a faint smudge of grey paint near the floorboards that vanished entirely when he wiped it with his thumb.
