Episode 1: The Unsent Page

Private eye Thomas Sterling examined a half-burned letter resting on a famous author’s oak desk, its charred edges curling in the dim study light. The author, renowned historical novelist Arthur Pendelton, had been found dead in his locked study earlier that rainy evening under mysterious circumstances. The half-burned page contained ominous predictions of an impending murder, written in Pendelton’s frantic, sweeping cursive hand. Thomas adjusted his fedora, shining his penlight over the charred paper to decipher the obscured words written near the bottom margin. The letter spoke of a high-level government conspiracy involving stolen wartime bonds and a prominent city publisher who would stop at nothing to silence the truth. There were no signs of a struggle in the room, no spilled ink, and no displaced furniture to suggest a violent confrontation took place before the author’s heart gave out. Yet, Thomas knew that murder could be executed with a pen just as easily as with a dagger, especially when words held the power to destroy empires. He pulled a pair of cotton gloves over his hands, sliding the fragile letter into a protective plastic sleeve to preserve it for forensic document analysis. The study seemed to watch him with silent accusation, its towering bookshelves casting long, skeletal shadows across the Persian rug.

 Bolts from Within

The study was bolted securely from the inside with window catches latched, creating an inexplicable locked-room puzzle that baffled the local police inspectors. Every door was deadbolted from within, every window frame was nailed shut to keep out the autumn draft, and the chimney flue was blocked by an iron grate. Thomas walked the perimeter of the room, tapping the dark oak paneling with his knuckles to check for hollow spaces or hidden egress routes. The local authorities had initially ruled the death a tragic heart attack caused by old age and stress, but Thomas refused to accept the easy answer. He noticed a faint draft of cold air brushing against the back of his neck despite every window and door being sealed tight against the storm. Tracing the source of the draft led him directly to the grand stone fireplace, where the iron grate showed subtle signs of recent movement. He knelt down, shining his flashlight up into the dark masonry of the flue, discovering a cleverly disguised mechanical latch hidden behind the decorative stonework. Someone had entered the locked room through the chimney, committing murder without leaving a single footprint on the pristine Persian rug. The locked-room mystery was solved, revealing a chilling level of premeditation and physical daring that pointed toward a professional killer.
