Episode 07: The Room of Stolen Prologues

The subterranean archive known as the Depository of Beginnings, located two hundred feet beneath the Aethelgard National Library, was a windowless chamber where the introductory chapters of every monumental work of literature, science, and philosophy were preserved in glass jars. Archivist Vanya Vance walked down the endless aisles of glowing glass containers, each one filled with a shimmering, iridescent fluid that represented the spark of creation for a famous book. Vanya was conducting her quarterly fluid-level checks, ensuring the preservation matrices remained stable. Yet, as she reached aisle nine, she noticed that several glass jars were completely empty, their preservation fluid drained away and their glass walls fractured from the inside. She shone her penlight into the empty containers, reading the small brass labels attached to their bases: The Prologue to Paradise Lost, The Origin of Species: Introduction, The First Law of Motion: Preface. Someone—or something—had been systematically stealing the beginnings of foundational human knowledge. A sudden, sharp sound of shattering glass echoed from further down the dark aisle. Vanya drew her service flashlight and stepped cautiously around the corner, her light illuminating a tall, shadowy figure standing before an open glass jar, drinking the iridescent fluid directly from the rim. The entity turned its head toward her—a head lacking eyes, featuring only a massive, vertical mouth filled with pages of torn vellum instead of teeth. The intruder let out a deafening screeching sound that rattled the remaining glass jars on the shelves, shattering their seals and releasing a tidal wave of stolen prologues that flooded the corridor with a blinding, confusing tide of raw, unformed ideas.

The Key to the Final Shelf

High upon the iron catwalks of the Great Rotunda of Meridian, senior librarian Silas Vance stood before the towering, twenty-foot-tall mahogany shelving unit known as the Final Shelf. The Final Shelf was the most heavily guarded literary enclosure in the world, holding the single surviving master copy of the Omni-Codex—a volume rumored to contain the complete, unedited history of the universe from birth to final collapse. The shelf was locked behind a massive, complicated iron gate secured by three distinct keyholes, and the only key capable of opening it was kept in the vault below. Silas held that heavy iron key in his trembling hand, acutely aware of the heavy responsibility resting on his shoulders. The high council had ordered the Omni-Codex opened for emergency inspection following global seismic anomalies. He climbed the iron stairs to the catwalk, inserted the cold iron key into the upper lock, and turned it with a satisfying, mechanical click. He inserted the second key, and the middle lock gave way. But as he reached for the third and final keyhole, he realized with a jolt of pure terror that the keyhole was not a mechanical aperture at all; it was a living, wet human eye set directly into the mahogany wood, blinking slowly as it stared up into his face. Before he could drop the key, the eye dilated in terror, and a row of sharp, wooden teeth snapped shut around his fingers, pinning his hand to the shelf as the entire mahogany bookcase began to unhinge from the wall and lean outward over the dizzying two-hundred-foot drop of the rotunda.
