Episode 04: The Book That Wrote Itself at Midnight

Inside the locked rare-book vault of the Veridun Academy, librarian Eleanor Vance sat alone at her mahogany desk, watching the hands of the wall clock approach twelve. The vault was a secure, temperature-controlled sanctuary housing the most dangerous manuscripts recovered by the academic council. Before her on the green felt blotter lay a completely blank, unlined journal bound in smooth white vellum—an artifact recovered from an unmapped ruin in the eastern badlands. The book had no title, no author, and no ink residue on any of its three hundred pristine pages. Eleanor’s instructions from the high council were clear: observe the vellum artifact at the stroke of midnight and record any physical or chemical changes that occurred within the vault. As the grandfather clock in the outer hallway chimed the twelfth heavy stroke, the air in the vault instantly grew ice-cold, frosting the glass of the display cases. Eleanor watched in stunned disbelief as a fine, feathered quill pen resting on a brass stand beside the book lifted into the air entirely on its own. The quill positioned itself over the center of the blank vellum page and began to write at a frantic, blinding speed. There was no hand guiding it, no mechanical apparatus, and no inkwell nearby—yet a dark, crimson fluid flowed from the tip of the quill, staining the white page with precise, elegant script. Eleanor leaned forward, straining her eyes to read the words as they formed. The book was writing an exhaustive, minute-by-minute account of her own murder, detailing every agonizing detail of her impending demise at the hands of an unseen executioner standing directly behind her chair in the dark.

The Quill of Forgotten Thoughts

In the cluttered, ink-stained attic workshop of master instrument maker Orson Thorne in Old-Port District, a strange brass-and-bone artifact sat under the harsh glare of a magnifying lamp. The object was an antique writing quill fashioned from the wing bone of an albatross, fitted with a nib made of meteoric iron. Orson was a man obsessed with capturing fleeting ideas, believing that true brilliance lay in the preservation of stray thoughts before they dissolved into the ether. Yet, this particular quill—acquired from a dubious sea merchant—possessed a terrifying parasitic property. When Orson dipped the iron nib into black ink and pressed it against paper, the pen did not write the thoughts currently passing through his conscious mind. Instead, it scraped across the parchment, writing down the forgotten, intrusive thoughts and dark impulses of every person who had died within a mile radius over the past century. Orson stared at the paper in horror as the quill raced across the sheet, scrawling confessions of murder, treason, madness, and despair in a dozen different handwritings that were not his own. He tried to let go of the quill, but his fingers were locked around the bone shaft by an invisible, vice-like cramp. The hand holding the pen began to move faster, carving deep gouges into the wooden workbench beneath the paper as the ink turned from black to a deep, coagulated red. Whispers filled the attic workshop—the collective voices of the dead whose final, unspoken secrets were being forcefully transcribed through his body, draining his vitality and freezing his blood until his own thoughts were permanently silenced by the flood of forgotten misery.
