Episode 1: The Loom in the Attic

Dust motes danced in the shaft of pale afternoon light filtering through the cracked skylight of the Victorian attic. Clara brushed a stray lock of brown hair from her forehead, her fingers resting gently on the wooden shuttle. The antique loom before her was a marvel of intricate iron gears and weathered mahogany beams handed down through generations. Unlike ordinary looms designed for wool or silk, this machine was built to weave pure, intangible shadows. She pulled a lever on the side, and the heavy iron heddles shifted with a rhythmic, muted clack. On the spindle below, a spool of shimmering obsidian thread unwound smoothly into the tension guides. Clara was a shadow weaver, tasked with repairing the frayed edges of people’s silhouettes left behind in moments of trauma. However, today’s project was unlike anything she had ever encountered in her apprenticeship ledgers. Resting on the work table was a glass jar containing a wisp of smoke-like grey vapor labeled ‘Unclaimed Silhouette’. As she uncapped the jar, the grey vapor escaped, swirling around the wooden frame of the loom like a living entity. The loom’s gears spun on their own, vibrating with a low, melancholic frequency that resonated in her chest. She stepped back cautiously, watching as the vapor settled onto the warp threads and began to form a distinct human shape.

Threading the Gloom

The woven silhouette took form upon the cloth beam, depicting a tall man holding an antique pocket watch. Clara leaned closer, examining the delicate weave of grey threads that captured every subtle contour of the figure. Suddenly, the silhouette blinked its woven eyes and reached out a shadowy hand toward her wrist. She gasped, stumbling backward and knocking over a jar of silver fixing solution onto the wooden floorboards. The liquid soaked into the grain, causing the surrounding shadows in the attic to detach and swirl violently. The silhouette spoke in a faint, rustling whisper that sounded like dry leaves skittering across pavement in autumn. “Find the missing second hand,” the shadow whispered, its voice carrying an overwhelming sense of profound sorrow. Clara steadied herself, picking up her wooden shuttle and taking a deep breath to calm her racing pulse. “Who are you, and what happened to your watch?” she asked softly, addressing the woven anomaly on the loom. The silhouette pointed toward the window, directing her gaze across the cobblestone street to an abandoned pawnshop opposite. The pawnshop had been boarded up for decades following the mysterious disappearance of its eccentric horologist owner. Clara realized that the silhouette was tethered to an unresolved mystery locked inside that shuttered building across the street. She packed her weaving kit into a leather satchel, knowing her quiet attic sanctuary was about to be abandoned for the damp streets.
