The Weaver of Lost Shadows
Episode 5: The Final Tapestry
Clara reached the base of the massive clock tower, finding the heavy iron service door unlocked and slightly ajar. She slipped inside, ascending the spiral stone staircase that wound upward into the dark interior. The air grew colder with every step, smelling of ozone, old iron, and stagnant rainwater. Reaching the upper chamber, she found the robed woman standing before a gigantic loom made of black steel. Hanging from the steel frame were hundreds of human silhouettes trapped inside glowing glass vials. The woman turned around, revealing a face obscured by a woven mask of grey and crimson threads. “You should have stayed in your attic, weaver,” the woman said, her voice sounding like grinding gears. “Shadows are currency, and this city is drowning in debt.” Clara stood her ground, pulling her glowing blue cloak tightly around her shoulders against the chill. “Shadows belong to the people who lived them, not to a thief hiding in a clock tower,” Clara declared. The robed woman raised her hand, and the black steel loom lashed out with razor-sharp shadow threads. Clara dodged the attack, pulling her bone needle from her satchel and running toward the steel frame. With rapid, precise movements, she began slashing the anchoring cables holding the suspended glass vials in place.
The Final Tapestry
As Clara severed the anchoring cables, the glass vials shattered against the stone floor in unison. Hundreds of trapped silhouettes burst free from their prisons, rising like glowing starlings toward the glass ceiling. The robed woman screamed as her harvested collection dissolved into the night sky, breaking her control over the tower. The black steel loom sparked furiously, its gears seizing up as the balance of power shifted back to the citizens. Clara threw her remaining silver thread around the central crankshaft, binding the machine into permanent stillness. The robed woman collapsed to her knees, her woven mask unravelling into harmless grey dust motes. Clara walked over to the shattered clock face, watching as the city below bathed in restored morning light. Her own shadow stretched long and clear behind her on the stone floor, completely free of corruption. She descended the spiral staircase, leaving the silent clock tower behind her as she walked home. Her attic workshop welcomed her with familiar warmth, dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunbeams once again. She sat down at her antique wooden loom, ready to weave new stories for anyone who needed them. The city was safe, its lost shadows restored to their rightful owners, and Clara’s work continued in peace.
