Episode 2: The Rustling Bough

Following the underground spring’s path, Rowan and Lyra tracked the source toward the abandoned stone quarry downstream. The forest grew unnaturally silent around them; even the birds had ceased their melodic morning calls. They crept through the fern-choked ravine, keeping low behind moss-covered boulders to avoid detection. Ahead of them, the stone quarry came into view, surrounded by rusted metal barrels and pumping equipment. Several men clad in industrial black uniforms were operating a crude gasoline pump connected to the spring. A black hose ran directly from the pump into the clear water stream that fed the forest’s root system. “That’s the poison source,” Lyra whispered, pointing her field glass at the barrels marked with skull symbols. Rowan unholstered his wooden blowpipe and a quiver of paralytic thorn darts from his belt. “Wait here until I disable the pump intake, then cut the hose with your pruning blade,” Rowan instructed quietly. He slipped silently through the fern undergrowth like a shadow, closing the distance to the oblivious guards. With two rapid puffs, his thorn darts found their marks, dropping the guards into instant, quiet slumber. He rushed forward to the gasoline pump, grabbing the heavy iron shut-off valve with both hands.

Bark and Breath

Rowan twisted the iron shut-off valve hard, cutting the flow of toxic chemicals into the stream instantly. The pump sputtered, coughed black smoke into the air, and ground to a sudden, silent halt. Lyra rushed forward with her heavy pruning blade, slicing the rubber intake hose into useless ribbons. However, the damage to the immediate area was already done; the surrounding trees had turned grey and brittle. Rowan pressed his hand against the nearest dying birch tree, whispering a soothing arboreal incantation. A faint green glow emanated from his palm, transferring a portion of his own vitality into the bark. The birch tree shivered, its leaves regaining a faint hint of green before the energy drain overwhelmed him. “We can’t save them all individually, Rowan; we need to neutralize the residue in the water,” Lyra warned. She pulled a pouch of neutralizing crystal powder from her satchel and tossed it into the spring. The water bubbled furiously, turning from murky black back to crystal clear as the formula neutralized the toxins. Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet trembled violently, and a deep groaning sound echoed from the quarry cliffs. A hidden metal door set into the cliffside slid open, revealing a subterranean laboratory lit by harsh fluorescent lights.
