The Forest of Whispering Leaves
Episode 3: The Green Archive
Stepping cautiously through the open metal door, Rowan and Lyra entered the brightly lit underground laboratory. Rows of glass specimen tanks lined the walls, containing mutated plant samples glowing with unnatural light. In the center of the room stood a metal desk covered in research notes, blueprints, and chemical formulas. Lyra picked up a leather-bound logbook, flipping through the pages with mounting horror and disbelief. “This isn’t just an ordinary logging operation, Rowan,” Lyra whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “They are weaponizing the forest’s communication network to transmit destructive signals.” According to the logbook, an industrial syndicate planned to clear-cut the entire valley to build a sprawling mining city. By infecting the root network with synthetic blight, they could force the trees to self-destruct organically. Rowan felt a cold fury rise within his chest as he read the names of the corporate backers listed inside. Among them was Governor Sterling, the highest elected official in the regional capital across the valley. Before they could grab the logbook as evidence, heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the laboratory exit. A recorded voice echoed from the ceiling speakers: “Unauthorized intrusion detected. Facility lockdown initiated.”
Tremors in the Soil
The laboratory shook violently as automated security systems activated overhead, venting noxious gas into the room. Rowan smashed the glass casing of a manual emergency release lever with his iron hilt. The heavy steel shutters cranked upward just enough for them to crawl beneath into the corridor. Coughing from the lingering gas fumes, they sprinted back toward the quarry exit into the fresh air. Behind them, the entire cliffside began to cave in as self-destruct charges detonated inside the underground lab. Rocks and debris tumbled down the hillside, burying the pumping equipment and sealing the quarry entrance forever. Rowan and Lyra collapsed near the edge of the stream, catching their breath as the tremors finally subsided. “We have the logbook evidence, but Governor Sterling will just deny everything if we go to court,” Lyra noted. Rowan looked up at the towering canopy of the Whisperwood rustling gently in the mountain breeze. “We don’t need a court; we need the forest itself to testify against him,” Rowan declared with quiet determination. He pulled out his hollow wooden listening cone and pressed it firmly into the soil at his feet. The root network pulsed in response, ready to carry their message across the entire valley in seconds.
