Episode 4: The Hidden Layer

Stumbling backward, Julian knocked over a stack of heavy art books, revealing a hidden compartment built into the base of the grand easel. Inside lay a stack of damp, uncatalogued letters written in Master Alistair’s hand more than a century ago. Tearing open the brittle envelopes, Julian read the horrifying truth: Alistair was not an artist, but a temporal architect who trapped his own soul within the primary master canvas to escape his mortal demise, requiring a fresh human vessel every century to renew the binding. The portrait of Lady Eleanor was not a historical artifact, but Alistair’s original self-portrait, altered through centuries of absorbed identities. As Julian read the final line—“The gallery is complete when twenty souls adorn the walls”—the temperature in the salon plummeted to freezing, and his breath plumed in the air as frosty white clouds.

 Prophecy in Pigments

The nineteen portraits around the room began to bleed thick, crimson oil paint from their frames, pooling across the hardwood floor and forming intricate, geometric runes that glowed with a sickly phosphorescent light. Julian looked up at the main wall and saw that his portrait had shifted again; his physical body was no longer standing in the room, but was now trapped inside the canvas, banging frantically against the glass-like surface from within. The figure of Master Alistair stepped out from the frame of Lady Eleanor’s portrait, shedding its velvet gown and assuming a towering, skeletal form composed of dried brushstrokes and cracked gesso. Alistair advanced toward the easel, holding a fresh palette knife designed to carve the final signature into the newly completed work.
