The Portrait Gallery of Tomorrow
Episode 5: The Final Frame
Gathering his remaining strength, Julian—still trapped in his own physical form outside the canvas for one agonizing final moment—grabbed a heavy brass candlestick and hurled it directly at Master Alistair’s chest. The metal passed straight through the entity’s spectral form, shattering the glass frame of Lady Eleanor’s portrait behind it. A blinding flash of golden light filled the salon, accompanied by the sound of tearing canvas and roaring wind as the temporal loop fractured under the impact. The runes on the floor shattered like brittle glass, and the nineteen historical portraits instantly reverted to their original, static states, their eyes locked in neutral, harmless stares. Silence descended upon the grand salon, broken only by the steady, rhythmic ticking of the antique pocket watch lying abandoned on the floorboards.
Blank Canvases
Morning light poured through the tall windows of the Ravenwood estate, illuminating the grand salon in a warm, comforting glow that dispelled all traces of the nocturnal nightmare. Municipal art inspectors, summoned by an automated distress alert Julian had set up prior to his ordeal, unlocked the front doors and stepped into the room. They found the twenty oil portraits hanging neatly in their places, perfectly restored and recognized as priceless historical masterpieces of the Victorian era. However, the easel in the center of the room held no portrait of Julian Vance; the canvas was completely blank, pristine white, and smelled faintly of fresh linseed oil and sea salt. The inspectors noted the absence of the resident restorer in their logs, assuming he had simply abandoned the project and departed into the morning fog without leaving a forwarding address.
