The Amber-Keeper's Ledger
Episode 2: Cataloging the Past
Silas descended the stone steps into the subterranean vault, holding his oil lantern high to illuminate the space. Shelves carved directly into the living resin walls held thousands of glowing amber ledgers containing recorded history. He pulled the nearest ledger from the shelf, opening its translucent cover to examine the preserved pages inside. The pages were thin sheets of solidified tree sap inscribed with holographic text detailing forgotten civilizations. He realized this vault was the ultimate historical archive of the continent, hidden away before the great fires. Suddenly, a mechanical whirring sound echoed from the dark corner of the vault near the back wall. An automated brass preservation automaton rolled out from the shadows on tracked wheels, its optical lens glowing red. “Unauthorized cataloger detected; verify security credentials,” the automaton stated in a metallic, synthetic voice. Silas quickly pulled out the moving-insect amber specimen and held it up toward the automaton’s optical lens. The red light turned solid green instantly, and the automaton lowered its mechanical arms in a peaceful gesture.
The Walking Fossil
The automaton guided Silas toward a central restoration desk equipped with optical magnifying equipment and resin applicators. “Welcome, Keeper Silas; your lineage was chosen to inherit the Archive of the Golden Sap,” the machine explained. Silas set his satchel down on the wooden desk, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the historical repository. “Why was this archive hidden beneath the forest floor instead of kept in city libraries?” Silas asked. “Because human empires rise and fall, but amber preserves the truth without corruption or political bias,” the automaton replied. To demonstrate, the automaton projected a historical record from an amber block onto the central stone table. Silas watched as empires crumbled and rebuilt themselves through centuries, captured in stunning three-dimensional detail. However, one ledger near the back of the shelf caught his eye because its resin was turning cloudy black. The black cloud was spreading rapidly across the amber pages, threatening to erase an entire era of human history.
