Episode 02: The Room That Was Never Built

Armed with the anomalous floor plan from the municipal office, Bastian navigated the darkened, labyrinthine service corridors of Keldoria Manor until he reached the northern perimeter wall of the ground floor. According to the blueprint, a concealed access panel should be located behind a massive, floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookcase in what was once the estate secretary’s study. Bastian held his flashlight beam steady, scanning the dense rows of leather-bound municipal code books and nineteenth-century agricultural journals. He pressed his palms against the heavy wood, pushing and sliding the shelving unit until a loud, mechanical click echoed through the wall. The entire bookcase swung inward on heavy brass pivots, revealing a narrow, pitch-black corridor that was entirely absent from the modern architectural surveys of the manor. The air inside this hidden passageway was frigid and dead, carrying no dust, no mold, and no movement—just an absolute, suffocating stillness. Bastian stepped across the threshold, his boots echoing sharply on smooth, freshly laid concrete that looked as though it had been poured only yesterday, despite the decades of abandonment rotting the rest of the estate. He walked down the corridor for thirty paces until he reached a heavy, flush-mounted steel door fitted with a modern cylinder lock. He flashed his light against the metal surface, discovering a brass plaque riveted to the door frame bearing an inscription that sent a shiver straight down his spine: “Engineering Annex – Room 0 – Authorized Personnel Only.” The modern steel door stood slightly ajar, a fraction of an inch, leaking a thin line of pale, artificial fluorescent light out into the dark, dusty corridor—a light powered by electricity in a wing of the mansion where the main generator had been dismantled in 1950.

The Pencil Marks of 1942

Bastian pushed the heavy steel door open with the tip of his crowbar, stepping gingerly into Room 0. To his utter bewilderment, the space was not a damp, crumbling basement vault, but a fully functional, brightly lit drafting studio frozen in the middle of a working day from World War II. Twin fluorescent tubes hummed softly overhead, casting a harsh, clinical white glare across a spacious room lined with drafting tables, ink bottles, T-squares, and scattered technical manuals. In the center of the room stood a large mahogany table covered in meticulous architectural sketches pinned down with brass tacks. Bastian walked slowly toward the table, his footsteps clicking against spotless, polished linoleum flooring. He looked down at the documents, noticing that the pencil marks were crisp, fresh, and distinctly sharp, as if drawn mere minutes ago. He picked up a wooden drafting pencil resting beside a scale ruler; the lead was freshly sharpened, and graphite dust still dusted the fingers of his glove when he touched it. He examined the technical drawings, recognizing the signature E. Vance in the corner of every sheet. The drawings detailed the structural reinforcement of the manor’s foundation walls, but as he flipped through the stack, the sketches grew increasingly frantic and delusional. The final page featured no architectural plans at all; instead, it contained a repeated, obsessive scrawl filling every available square inch of paper with a single, terrifying question written in dark graphite: “If the blueprints were drawn in 1942, why do the foundation walls already have my bones inside them?” A sudden, violent power surge caused the overhead fluorescent lights to flicker and burst with a shower of white-hot sparks, plunging the room into total darkness while the sound of a mechanical pencil scratching furiously against paper began to echo from the far corner of the unbuilt room.
