The Bridge of Whispers
Episode 2: Stones That Listen
Startled by the voices, Ethan stepped back, dropping the silver amulet back into its stone cavity in panic. The stones of the bridge seemed to groan and shift beneath his boots as if waking from a long slumber. He hurried back to the gatehouse, locking the heavy oak door behind him with trembling hands. Opening his master historical ledger, he searched for records regarding the Eye of Veridith and the bridge. The pages revealed that the bridge was built not merely for transport, but as an acoustic prison for secrets. Anyone who crossed while harboring a dark secret fed energy into the stones, strengthening the bridge’s magical anchors. If the Eye of Veridith was removed from its cavity, the acoustic anchors would fail completely. This meant the bridge could collapse into the River Glimmer, severing the only connection between the provinces. Suddenly, a heavy knock rattled the gatehouse door, followed by a cold, commanding voice outside. “Open the gatehouse, keeper; I know you have recovered the amulet from the keystone pier,” a man demanded. Ethan grabbed his lantern and a heavy iron poker, preparing to defend the threshold against the intruder.
The Arch of Confessions
The wooden door splintered under a powerful kick, and a tall man in silver armor stepped into the room. It was Commander Vance of the regional inquisitors, notorious for extracting secrets through torture and intimidation. “Hand over the Eye of Veridith, keeper, or face charges of treason against the crown,” Vance ordered coldly. Ethan stood his ground behind the mahogany podium, resting his hand on the heavy iron toll ledger. “The amulet stays in the bridge, Vance, unless you want the entire structure to collapse into the canyon,” Ethan warned. Vance sneer, drawing a polished steel sword from his scabbard that caught the lantern light. “The bridge is just old stone; my employers want the artifact to secure absolute control over the province,” Vance replied. Vance lunged forward, thrusting the sword toward Ethan with lethal intent and brutal speed. Ethan ducked behind the sturdy podium, using his iron poker to deflect a secondary strike from the blade. Seizing an opportunity, Ethan kicked a stack of heavy toll ledgers onto Vance’s boots, sending him crashing down. Without wasting a second, Ethan bolted through the broken doorway out onto the misty stone bridge span.
