Episode 07: The Room of Frozen Seconds

With the master key gripped firmly in his right hand and the heavy iron mallet in his left, Gideon prepared for the final, decisive strike against the chronium glass dial. But as he raised the mallet for the third blow, the air around them suddenly grew thick, heavy, and completely motionless. The screeching alarm bell from the belfry cut off instantly in mid-note. The dust motes floating in the air froze mid-fall, hanging suspended in the yellow-gray light like tiny stars. The very concept of time within the tower had abruptly collapsed into an absolute, static vacuum—the Room of Frozen Seconds. Gideon found that he could no longer move his legs; his boots were anchored to the stone floor as though rooted in stone. Only his arms and his eyes remained free to act, bound by an anomalous bubble of localized time. Barnaby stood beside him like a marble statue, his mouth half-open in a frozen gasp. Recognizing the extreme peril, Gideon did not hesitate. He did not waste time swinging the mallet; instead, he lunged forward with his upper body, shoving the master key directly into the exposed central arbour of the clockwork behind the broken glass dial, and threw his entire weight into turning it counter-clockwise against the frozen resistance of the universe.

The Midnight Strike That Sounded Twice

As the master key clicked into the arbour and turned against the frozen vacuum, a deep, resonant vibration rippled through Gideon’s arms, shattering the time bubble and releasing a shockwave of kinetic energy that sent him sprawling across the stone floor. Instantly, the frozen seconds unfurled with explosive velocity. The church bells in the town square—silent for decades—suddenly sprang to life, striking midnight with a deep, solemn peel that echoed across the moorlands. But the strike was profoundly wrong: the heavy bronze bell rang out once, paused for a fraction of a second, and then struck a second time, with an eerie, doubling echo that overlapped the first note like a audio recording played twice simultaneously. Bong… bong… bong… The dual strike sent shockwaves through the air, causing the remaining fragments of the chronium glass dial to shatter into sparkling diamond dust that rained down across the floor. The heavy iron portcullis blocking the exit stairwell groaned, lifted itself back into the ceiling on invisible cables, and the artificial fog inside the tower burned away in a flash of brilliant, warm amber light.
