Episode 4: The Docks Exchange

Determined to locate the secondary drop point, Jonathan analyzed the digital shipping logs for any vessel movements registered during the exact hour of the raid. A small tugboat named The Albatross had slipped out of the harbor toward the old naval quarantine station on Pelican Island. Renting a fast motorboat from the municipal marina, Jonathan navigated the choppy harbor waters alone, braving the freezing spray as he approached the abandoned quarantine station. The island’s rotting wooden piers were silent under the gray morning sky, save for a single sleek yacht moored at the end of the main dock. Creaking onto the wooden boards, Jonathan peered through the cabin window of the yacht, seeing stacked duffel bags and men in expensive suits exchanging briefcases filled with cash. It was the final handover of the diamond syndicate’s leadership. Jonathan drew his encrypted radio, quietly transmitting the exact island coordinates to Inspector Sterling before creeping closer to the cabin door. A heavy hand suddenly clamped over his mouth from behind, dragging him backward into the shadows of a rusted cargo crane.

The Shadow Accountant

“You’re remarkably persistent for an auditor, Mr. Vance,” a smooth, cultured voice whispered directly into Jonathan’s ear. Jonathan was spun around to face Victor Thorne, the mastermind behind the entire international shipping cartel and the true author of the sapphire ledger. Thorne held a suppressed pistol casually at his side, smiling with cold amusement. “The ledger was never meant to be found by the police; it was bait to eliminate my incompetent business partners so I could abscond with the entire syndicate treasury,” Thorne explained smoothly. Jonathan struggled against his grip, but Thorne’s enforcer held him securely against the cold steel crane pillar. “You’ll never get away with it. The federal coast guard is already surrounding the island,” Jonathan countered bravely. Thorne laughed softly, checking his Rolex watch. “The coast guard is currently investigating a false bomb threat at the opposite end of the harbor. We have plenty of time.” Just as Thorne raised his weapon to silence Jonathan permanently, the deafening roar of a police helicopter split the sky overhead, bathing the docks in blinding searchlight beams.
