Episode 4: The Silent Watch

The atmosphere inside Chronos Cottage grew tense and watchful over the next several days following Councilman Vance’s unexpected visit. Althea spent her mornings working on routine watch repairs while keeping a vigilant eye on the street through the front window. Silas remained unusually quiet, deeply troubled by the possibility that Vance intended to seize their ancestral artifacts for municipal propaganda. To test the security of the workshop, Althea installed a clever mechanical tripwire connected to an old brass service bell above the back door. Late one evening, while reviewing the recovered astronomical journals, a sharp metallic ding shattered the quiet stillness of the cottage. Althea froze instantly, extinguishing the oil lamp with a quick breath while motioning for Silas to stay back behind the heavy wooden shelving. Footsteps scraped softly against the gravel path leading toward the rear workshop entrance, followed by the faint rustling of ivy against the glass pane. Someone was attempting to break into the cottage under the cover of darkness to search for the hidden winding key and documents. Silas reached instinctively for a heavy iron hammer on the workbench, his jaw set with fierce determination to protect his home and daughter. Althea shook her head, whispering a quick plan into her father’s ear to catch the intruder off guard without risking physical harm. She quietly slipped toward the master clock by the hallway, waiting for the precise moment when the heavy weights reached the bottom of their descent. With a swift, calculated tug on the manual strike lever, she triggered the massive grandfather clock to chime a booming, echoing hour right behind the rear door. The sudden, deafening roar of the brass chimes reverberated through the small cottage like thunder in an enclosed cave. Outside, a startled gasp broke the silence, followed by the sound of rapid, panicked footsteps scrambling away down the gravel path. Althea flicked on the exterior porch light, flinging open the back door just in time to see a dark figure disappearing into the misty fog. The silent watch had successfully repelled the intruder, but it was clear that Councilman Vance would not give up so easily. They realized they needed to secure the carriage clock and the recovered journals in a safer, permanent public repository before the next council meeting. Working through the night by candlelight, they prepared the artifacts for formal donation to the provincial museum, ensuring they remained protected by law.

 The Second Hand

With the threat of theft looming over them, Althea and Silas took swift action to safeguard their ancestral legacy before the council could intervene. Early the next morning, they loaded the carriage clock, the lead box, and the recovered journals into the back of their wooden cart. Althea drove the horse-drawn cart along the winding mountain road toward the provincial capital, arriving at the historical museum before noon. The museum curator, Dr. Henderson, welcomed them with open arms, recognizing the immense historical value of the Thorne family horological collection. As the heavy iron vault doors of the archive closed securely behind their precious cargo, both Althea and Silas felt a massive weight lift from their shoulders. Returning to Pendelton that evening, the workshop felt peaceful and secure once again, free from the lingering paranoia of the past week. Althea sat at her workbench, turning her attention back to the daily craft that had united her family across generations. She picked up a delicate gold pocket watch belonging to a local farmer, focusing her magnifying loupe on the tiny second hand that had jammed. Using a pair of ultra-fine tipped tweezers, she delicately adjusted the hairspring tension until the second hand began its smooth, unbroken sweep once more. Silas walked over, setting down a fresh cup of chamomile tea beside her elbow with an affectionate pat on the shoulder. “You know, protecting our history was important, but keeping this workshop alive is where our true heart beats,” Silas said warmly. Althea smiled up at her father, watching the second hand sweep effortlessly around the enamel dial with perfect, timeless precision. “The past gives us our foundation, Dad, but the present is where we build our future,” Althea replied thoughtfully. The crisis with the councilman had come and gone, leaving their bond stronger and their craft more purposeful than ever before. Outside, the village steeple clock struck the evening hour, its chimes ringing out clear and true across the peaceful valley. Chronos Cottage was back to its comforting rhythm, ticking steadily toward a bright and unbroken horizon.
