Episode 2: Preserving the Quiet

The sound-blast wave knocked Julian off his feet, sending him crashing against a stack of empty storage crates. The intruder grabbed his heavy storage cylinder filled with stolen resonance frequencies and bolted toward the exit tunnel. Julian groaned, picking himself up and shaking his head to clear the lingering dizziness from his ears. He pulled his tuning fork from his pocket, striking it against the stone floor to calibrate his acoustics. Following the intruder’s vibration trail, he sprinted up the service stairs toward the upper gallery. Reaching the surface courtyard, he saw the robed figure escaping on a motorized carriage down the alleyway. Julian leaped onto his bicycle parked outside the curator’s lodge, pedaling furiously in hot pursuit of the carriage. He navigated the cobblestone alleys by listening to the distinct hum of the getaway vehicle’s electric motor. The carriage turned toward the industrial warehouse district near the old harbor docks on the riverfront.

The Missing Resonance

Julian reached the abandoned warehouse district, hiding his bicycle behind a rusted shipping container near the docks. He crept toward Warehouse 12, where the electric carriage was parked beside a loading bay door. Peering through a broken window pane, he saw the robed figure unloading stolen acoustic jars onto a workbench. Several wealthy clients in expensive suits stood around the workbench, bidding on specific recorded sounds of the past. One client bought the sound of the ocean waves from a vanished coastline; another purchased childhood laughter. Julian realized the black-market operation was selling off humanity’s collective acoustic heritage to private collectors for profit. He pulled out his portable acoustic recorder, setting it to broadcast mode to capture all incriminating audio evidence. As he hit record, his pocket accidentally brushed against a loose metal pipe, making a sharp clanging sound. The robed figure and his wealthy clients spun around instantly toward the window where Julian was hiding.
