Episode 2: Frost and Ember

Kaelen packed his carving tools, thermal rations, and the completed heart-ice map into a sturdy leather backpack. He strapped on his snowshoes and picked up his climbing staff, preparing for the perilous trek to the Frost-Spire. Vael stood at the workshop door, handing him a brass signal flare for emergency rescue communication if needed. “Remember, Kaelen, heart-ice loses its thermal charge if exposed to open blizzards without shelter,” Vael warned him. Kaelen nodded, securing the map inside an insulated metal case close to his chest for body warmth. He set off into the swirling white expanse of the tundra, guided only by the compass needle pointing north. Hours passed as he battled howling winds and freezing temperatures that threatened to numb his limbs completely. Reaching the base of the Frost-Spire mountain, he found the ancient stone staircase buried under deep snowdrifts. He cleared the steps with his climbing shovel, discovering a heavy iron service door sealed with thick frost. He pulled out his thermal torch, applying gentle heat to the hinges until the frozen lock finally gave way.

The Tropical Chill

Stepping through the iron door, Kaelen entered the massive interior of the Frost-Spire citadel with cautious steps. To his utter amazement, the air inside was not freezing, but comfortably warm, smelling of orchids and damp earth. A vast subterranean jungle flourished within the stone walls, lit by shafts of sunlight filtering through glass domes. Kaelen removed his heavy parka, wiping sweat from his forehead as he walked along the overgrown stone paths. In the center of the citadel stood a towering pillar of crystal housing the legendary master thermal core. However, the core was flickering erratically, casting strange purple shadows across the vibrant jungle flora below. Several automated maintenance drones lay smashed around the base of the pillar, their metallic casing scorched and ruined. A figure stepped out from behind a giant fern frond, wearing tactical winter gear and holding a thermal blaster. “Turn around, apprentice; this thermal energy source belongs to the extraction syndicate now,” a harsh voice ordered. Kaelen recognized the syndicate insignia on the mercenary’s jacket from wanted posters in the town square.
