Episode 2: The Furnace Heat

Summer brought blistering heatwaves to the artisan quarter, pushing the ambient temperature inside the glass studio past one hundred and ten degrees. The massive gas-fired glory-hole furnace radiated relentless thermal energy, turning the workshop into a punishing environment for physical labor. Despite the oppressive heat, Dorian and Kera had to maintain production schedules for an upcoming international design exhibition in the capital. Midday work shifts became grueling trials of endurance, requiring frequent hydration breaks and rotation of tasks away from the fire. While Kera was gathering molten crystal for a sculptural installation, a sudden dizziness washed over her in the stifling heat. She stumbled slightly, momentarily losing control of the heavy iron pipe as the glowing glass dipped toward the concrete floor. Dorian reacted instantly, catching the end of the blowpipe with his mittened hand and stabilizing the glass before disaster struck. He guided Kera out into the shaded courtyard immediately, pressing a cold, wet cloth to the back of her neck. “You can’t fight the furnace heat when your body reaches its limit; craftsmanship requires self-preservation,” Dorian scolded gently. Kera drank a large glass of salted water, nodding gratefully as her equilibrium returned under the cool outdoor breeze. “The glass demands respect, and so do our own physical limitations,” Kera admitted, humbled by the scorching close call. They agreed to limit furnace hours during peak afternoon temperatures, balancing artistic ambition with sensible health and safety.

 The Crystal Bubble

Working in the cooler hours of early morning, Kera experimented with trapping atmospheric gases inside a thick-walled crystal bubble. She gathered ultra-clear optical glass on her blowpipe, inflating it into a spherical shape before introducing a pinch of reactive metal powders. As the metallic powders vaporized inside the sealed cavity, they created swirling galaxies of iridescent micro-bubbles and metallic colors. Dorian watched the process with fascination, marveling at his daughter’s experimental approach to traditional glass chemistry. Kera placed the spherical bubble into a specialized wooden mold, blowing forcefully to expand the glass against the carved interior walls. When she opened the two-piece cherrywood mold, a stunning crystal orb emerged, capturing a frozen nebula of gold and violet light inside. “It looks like we captured a piece of the night sky inside a soap bubble,” Dorian whispered in absolute reverence. Kera beamed with pride, holding the luminous orb up to the morning sunlight streaming through the workshop window. The crystal bubble showcased her unique ability to merge traditional glassblowing mastery with modern sculptural imagination. It instantly became the centerpiece of their submission for the upcoming international design exhibition.
