Episode 1: The Iron Lockbox
Following the sudden passing of her mother in the upland valley town of Raven’s Hollow, Clara Vance returned to the sprawling, neglected family estate known as Blackwood Manor. The house was a gloomy Victorian structure perched on a windswept plateau, surrounded by dense groves of weeping willow trees and overgrown rose gardens. Tasked with sorting through decades of accumulated belongings, Clara spent her afternoons clearing out the damp, cluttered rooms on the ground floor. While moving a heavy mahogany sideboard in her mother’s downstairs study, she discovered a hidden compartment recessed into the wainscoting behind the heavy furniture. Within the recess sat a heavy iron lockbox coated in a fine layer of gray dust and sealed with a rusted padlock bearing no visible keyhole. Clara dusted off the metal surface with her sleeve, noticing a series of engraved geometric notches running along the perimeter of the lid. The box felt surprisingly heavy for its compact size, suggesting dense contents such as lead-weighted ledgers or solid metal artifacts. The air in the study felt stagnant and cold, carrying the faint, lingering scent of lavender water and burnt candle wax that had characterized her mother’s private habits. Clara carried the lockbox over to the reading desk, placing it beneath the illumination of a brass gooseneck lamp to examine the mechanism more closely.
Floorboard Secrets
Unable to open the rusted padlock with standard household tools, Clara searched the study for anything that could serve as a makeshift lever or pry bar. While inspecting the perimeter of the Persian rug beneath the mahogany sideboard, she noticed that one of the wide oak floorboards sounded hollow when tapped with her heel. Kneeling down, she pried at the edge of the plank using a flathead screwdriver from her toolbox until the rusted iron nails gave way with a sharp pop. Beneath the floorboard lay a shallow cavity lined with oiled canvas, protecting a collection of slim leather-bound notebooks and a heavy brass ring holding three distinct skeleton keys. Clara lifted the keys out, their metal surfaces gleaming dully in the dim light of the room, and carried them back to the iron lockbox on the desk. She tested the keys one by one in the mysterious perimeter notches of the padlock, feeling for internal spring resistance. The third key slid smoothly into a hidden vertical slot concealed beneath the decorative filigree work on the side of the housing. With a sharp twist of her wrist, the internal spring mechanism released with a satisfying metallic snap, and the heavy iron lid sprang upward under the pressure of an internal spring.
