The Locked Frequency
Episode 08: Guarded Broadcast
The clandestine pirate radio station hidden inside the abandoned clock tower of Old Meridian was bathed in the green glow of cathode-ray tube monitors. Operator Jax Vance adjusted his broadcast deck, preparing to transmit a whistle-blowing audio log that exposed the government’s illegal frequency experimentation program. This was to be a “Guarded Broadcast”—encrypted across a dozen rotating sub-channels to prevent military interception. Yet, as Jax pressed the master transmission key, the signal meters instantly pegged to maximum, and the audio output began to loop back on itself in a deafening, distorted echo. The transmission wasn’t going out to the public; it was being intercepted, amplified, and redirected back into the clock tower’s own internal wiring. Outside the arched windows, the night sky lit up with the blinding searchlights of military patrol helicopters circling the tower in tight, coordinated formations. Jax grabbed his data drive, intending to smash it against the concrete floor, but his hand froze mid-air as the heavy wooden door of the broadcast room slowly splintered open, revealing a row of heavily armed operatives standing silently in the doorway.
The Shielded Receiver
Deep within the subterranean vault of the Aethelgard Research Archive, archivist Elena Vance worked by the pale light of a handheld inspection lamp. Resting on the steel examination table before her was “The Shielded Receiver”—a heavy, lead-lined metallic box recovered from Professor Hallowell’s abandoned laboratory. The box was designed to completely block all electromagnetic radiation, yet Elena’s handheld radiation detector was clicking furiously, registering an intense energy spike leaking directly from the seams of the lid. She carefully picked up a pair of insulated tongs, gripping the heavy metal latch of the receiver with trembling fingers. The air in the underground vault grew suffocatingly heavy, the ambient temperature dropping rapidly as frost began to form across the outer casing of the box in intricate geometric patterns. With a resolute breath, Elena lifted the heavy lead lid, expecting to find classified documents or advanced electronic components. Instead, the interior of the receiver was completely empty, save for a single, glowing glass vacuum tube that hummed with a deep, resonant frequency that seemed to echo directly inside her own thoughts.
