Episode 4: The Midnight Alarm

The heavy silence of the Victorian parlor was shattered at midnight as a sharp, piercing alarm bell rang out from the chimney flue. A rival heir—none other than Arthur Vance himself—attempts to force the dial at midnight, having bypassed the exterior perimeter gates. Julian lunged across the room, drawing his sidearm just as the parlor door burst open with a resounding crash. Arthur stood in the doorway holding a heavy oxy-acetylene torch, his face twisted in a mask of frustrated rage and desperation. He had discovered the secret entrance through the wine cellar, bypassing Julian’s careful perimeter checks entirely. “Step away from the vault, Croft!” Arthur snarled, swinging the burning torch barrel toward Julian in a threatening arc. The flame hissed fiercely, casting dancing orange reflections across the cold steel of the vault door and threatening to ignite the nearby draperies. Julian held his ground, keeping his weapon leveled at Arthur’s shoulder while speaking in a calm, measured tone. “You’re burning the wrong locks, Arthur. That torch will trigger the acid vials inside and destroy your own inheritance.” Arthur hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the micro-pinhole near the vault base where warning indicators flashed red. That brief moment of hesitation was all Julian needed; he lunged forward, tackling Arthur to the Persian rug and sending the heavy torch clattering across the floor. A fierce struggle ensued between the two men, bodies crashing against furniture and overturning side tables as Arthur fought desperately for possession of the weapon. With a sharp twist of his arm, Julian pinned Arthur to the floor, disarming him and clicking a pair of heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

 The Hidden Compartment

With Arthur secured and locked in the parlor closet to await the local magistrates, Julian returned to the intricate task of opening the vault. Behind the pendulum housing of the grand clock, Julian discovers a miniature brass keyhole disguised as an ornamental screw. This concealed port had been revealed only when the counterweight reached its lowest resting point during the midnight struggle with Arthur. Using a fine-tipped jeweler’s screwdriver, Julian unscrewed the ornamental brass head, exposing a deep, narrow pin-tumbler cylinder that required a star-shaped key. He pulled the custom astronomical key he had forged from the astrolabe calculations, sliding it smoothly into the newly exposed slot. The key turned with a heavy, satisfying click, engaging the primary secondary release levers hidden deep within the wainscoting. The screech of ungreased iron grinding against iron echoed through the parlor as the internal locking bars began to retract one by one. Julian watched as the pressure gauges on the vault door dropped from the red danger zone back into the safe operating parameters. The acid vial trap disengaged automatically, its safety pins dropping into a locked containment basin beneath the floorboards. The mechanical governor whirred to a gentle halt, releasing the immense tension that had held the massive steel door captive for decades. Julian wiped the grease from his hands, feeling a profound sense of accomplishment as the final obstacle standing between him and the estate’s secrets vanished into thin air.
