Episode 2: The Dusty Easel

With the hidden portrait safely restored, Chloe and Julian turned their attention to the heavy oak easel that had supported the canvas through every generation. The wooden mechanism was jammed, its hand-carved adjustment pegs swollen from decades of attic humidity and wood dust accumulation. Julian fetched a small bottle of boiled linseed oil and a fine rasp, sitting down on a low stool to service the vintage frame. Kaelen cleaned out the accumulated sawdust from the gear slots, using a soft horsehair brush to reach into the narrowest wooden joints. “This easel was built by my grandfather using timber salvaged from an old ship rib down at the municipal docks,” Julian explained proudly. Kaelen tested the sliding crank mechanism, feeling the smooth, satisfying engagement of the brass teeth as the carriage moved upward. “It’s built like a tank; no modern factory-made aluminum stand could ever hold this much emotional and physical weight,” Kaelen agreed. As they worked side by side, brushing away the dust of decades, the attic felt increasingly alive with the spirits of past artists. They adjusted the height for a fresh, blank canvas, symbolizing their readiness to create their own collaborative art series. The dusty easel was no longer a relic of the past, but a sturdy bridge carrying their artistic lineage directly into tomorrow.

 The Faded Signature

While examining the lower right corner of the newly restored portrait, Chloe noticed a faint, nearly invisible inscription hidden beneath the artist’s brushstrokes. Using an ultraviolet inspection lamp in the darkened attic, she illuminated the fluorescent pigments of the original signature. The letters spelled out A. Vance – 1948, followed by a strange numerical code that did not correspond to any known cataloging system. Julian leaned in close, tapping the wood frame thoughtfully as he tried to recall what the numbers might signify. “Those digits aren’t just an inventory number; your great-grandmother was a member of the secret botanical guild in the capital,” Julian remembered. Chloe’s eyes widened with curiosity as she cross-referenced the code with historical documents stored in her digital archive tablet. “The code points to a specific botanical specimen she discovered in the northern ravines—a rare silver fern thought to be extinct,” Chloe realized. The faded signature had connected the portrait to a long-lost scientific discovery, expanding their family legacy beyond mere canvas and paint. They resolved to search the northern ravines during the upcoming weekend to see if the legendary fern still survived. For now, the signature was digitally cataloged and verified, securing the historical integrity of the masterwork forever.
