Episode 4: The Rogue Rope

Kaelen stood his ground beside the glowing brickwork of the annealing furnace, his face illuminated by the flickering orange flames. “You’re too late, magistrate. The charter is already reducing to elemental carbon inside the core,” Kaelen lied smoothly, watching Vance’s confident smile falter. Enraged, Vance motioned to his enforcers, ordering them to search every storage bin and casting pit in the sprawling foundry. While the guards scattered across the dim workshop floor, Kaelen pulled the actual vellum charter from his leather tool apron where he had safely stowed it moments before. He slipped through a low service tunnel leading toward the cooling room, where heavy industrial hoist ropes hung from the ceiling cranes. Hearing a shout from behind, he realized his deception had been discovered. He grabbed the thick hempen hoist rope, wrapping it around his waist as he kicked open the high clerestory window overlooking the rushing river below. Swinging out into the rainy night air like a pendulum, he dropped thirty feet down into the swollen, churning waters of the Oakhaven River. The icy current swallowed him whole, pulling him under before he surfaced gasping for air fifty yards downstream. Clinging to a floating timber, he let the river current carry him away from the foundry toward the safety of the old boat house where Silas Moore was waiting.

The Market Clue

Safe inside the dimly lit boat house, Kaelen dried off near a small coal stove while Silas examined the recovered parchment charter by lamplight. “You actually pulled it off, boy. The charter is safe,” Silas whispered, his weathered face breaking into a rare, relieved smile. But Kaelen knew they couldn’t stay hidden for long; the magistrate would lock down the entire valley by morning. Examining the parchment’s reverse side under a magnifying glass, Kaelen discovered a series of coded numbers written in invisible ink that only reacted to coal oil heat. Holding the vellum carefully a few inches above the stove chimney, a new set of instructions materialized across the bottom margin. It was a list of bank account numbers in Zurich where the syndicate had stashed millions in embezzled municipal funds over the past decade. The silent bell wasn’t just a political symbol; it was the physical key to a vast financial fortune hidden in European accounts. To unlock the accounts, however, they needed the founder’s personal signet ring, which had been lost during the great flood of 1901. Silas stroked his gray beard thoughtfully, pointing toward an old merchant stall in the morning market square known for selling river-dredged antiquities. “My grandfather always said the ring was swallowed by a giant sturgeon caught near the old mill weir,” Silas mused. With dawn breaking over the festival grounds, Kaelen prepared for one final, desperate gamble to expose the magistrate before the festival’s closing ceremony at noon.
