Episode 1: The Dry Dock

Salvage expert Jonah Reed investigates the drainage of the imperial dry dock, watching as millions of gallons of seawater surged through the massive sluice gates back into the harbor basin. The towering concrete walls of the dry dock gradually emerged from the receding tide, revealing the barnacle-encrusted hull of a historic nineteenth-century ironclad warship resting on wooden keel blocks. At the center of the ship’s elevated quarterdeck stood the brass binnacle stand, where an antique gimbaled compass was wrenched from its pedestal during the previous night’s clandestine break-in. Jonah descended a temporary metal staircase into the cavernous dry dock basin, his heavy rubber boots sinking slightly into the wet, muddy silt covering the concrete floor. He approached the empty binnacle stand, shining his flashlight over the jagged mounting bolts that had been sheared off with an oxy-arc torch. The antique compass was not merely a navigational relic; it served as the master mechanical key for a classified underwater munitions cache buried beneath the harbor shipping lanes. Without the compass and its unique lodestone needle, the cache’s automated self-destruct mechanisms would permanently lock the harbor entrance. Jonah pulled his forensic scanning kit from his tool belt, beginning the dangerous task of collecting physical evidence before the incoming tide flooded the dry dock once more.

 Nautical Nonsense

As Jonah inspected the binnacle mount, bizarre magnetic distortions sweep across the harbor basin, causing navigation systems on moored tugboats to spin erratically. Electronic compasses swung wildly between north and south, radar screens dissolved into blinding snowstorms of static, and automated dock cranes froze mid-operation. Jonah pulled out his handheld gaussmeter, watching the needle pin itself against the maximum limit of the dial with a sharp metallic click. This was not a natural geomagnetic anomaly; it was the deliberate result of a high-power electromagnetic induction coil operating somewhere beneath the harbor floor. The thieves were attempting to wipe electronic records and disorient harbor patrols while they extracted the remaining components of the sunken munitions cache. Jonah knew he had to act fast before the magnetic interference caused a catastrophic collision between commercial container ships navigating the narrow channel. He scrambled up the dry dock ladder, racing toward his marine operations truck to deploy his sub-surface sonar scanning array and track down the hidden electromagnetic source.
