Episode 3: Scribes in the Shadows

Before Leonard could reach the high court, a tip from an informant led him to a smoke-filled tavern in the shadowy warehouse district on the edge of the capital. Leonard corners a junior apprentice who reveals a shadowy syndicate paid a fortune to falsify city property charters. The terrified apprentice, shaking and pale in the flickering candlelight of the tavern booth, confessed that he had stolen the quill under direct orders from an expelled master forger. The syndicate had threatened to expose his family’s accumulated gambling debts if he refused to cooperate with the high-stakes forgery operation. “I didn’t want to do it, Master Grey! They said I’d only have to borrow it for one night!” the apprentice sobbed, burying his face in his trembling hands. Leonard offered the young man conditional protection in exchange for a signed confession and the name of the master forger orchestrating the conspiracy. The apprentice whispered a single name that made Leonard’s blood run cold: Master Malachi, a brilliant but disgraced scrivener who had sworn vengeance against the guild decades ago.

 The Written Word

Paleographic analysis conducted by the guild elders conclusively identifies the hand of an expelled master forger believed to have vanished a decade prior. Master Malachi’s signature sweeping script was hidden within the marginal annotations of the forged land deeds, disguised beneath layers of imitated handwriting. Malachi was a legendary figure in the criminal underworld, capable of forging anything from royal currency notes to papal bulls with terrifying accuracy. The return of the master forger signaled a concerted effort by corrupt nobles and criminal syndicates to seize control of the city’s real estate assets through systematic fraud. Leonard presented the paleographic analysis to the guild council, urging them to declare a state of emergency and dispatch magistrate guards to seal all city gates. The written word had become a lethal weapon, threatening to burn the legal foundations of the realm to the ground unless Malachi was captured and brought to swift justice.
