Episode 4: Frequencies in the Static

Holding his breath, Leo remained motionless behind the generator cabinets, watching the beam of light dance across the ceiling panels. The intruder paced slowly around the central console, checking the alignment of the tape reels and resetting a mechanical circuit breaker with a heavy thud. Leo recognized the distinctive gait and heavy wool overcoat of the town’s chief infrastructure inspector, a man who had publicly dismissed all rumors of anomalous radio activity in Oakhaven. The inspector muttered to himself, checking a handheld transceiver before adjusting the modulation frequency of the broadcast loop downward by three kilohertz. As the frequency shifted, the acoustic output in the room transformed from a rhythmic hum into a clear, intelligible sequence of spoken coordinates. Leo mentally noted the numbers, realizing they mapped out an underwater cave system located just off the base of the Oakhaven cliffs. The inspector eventually turned and walked back down the stairwell, his heavy boots fading into the subterranean depths of the facility. Once the echoes died away, Leo crawled out from his hiding place and quickly copied the decrypted coordinate string into his encrypted pocket notepad. He understood that the broadcast wasn’t just a recording—it was an active navigation beacon guiding something or someone toward the coastal caverns.

 The Unbroken Record

Deciding to verify the origin of the physical broadcast media, Leo examined the secondary playback deck housed in a locked wall-mounted rack. Using a small multi-tool from his backpack, he managed to spring the brass latch on the equipment cabinet without triggering any visible alarms. Inside lay an unbroken, continuous-loop master cassette labeled with handwritten initials that matched those in Mara Chen’s historical ledger. The tape had been running in a continuous cycle for over forty years, powered by an isolated geothermal generator buried deep within the bedrock. Leo carefully unspooled a small section of the tape to inspect the physical wear on the magnetic emulsion, noticing fresh splices indicating recent maintenance. Someone had updated the transmission parameters within the last week, adding updated coordinate markers that targeted current maritime traffic routes. This confirmed his suspicion that the anomaly wasn’t a historical ghost, but an active, ongoing operation managed by modern descendants of the original syndicate. He unclipped a miniature data logger from his belt and connected it directly to the master deck’s diagnostic port to dump the transmission logs. The download progress bar crept forward agonizingly slow as the device sucked up decades of encrypted operational data into its flash memory.
