The Silver Bell of Mistveil
Episode 2: The Empty Belfry
Driven by professional curiosity, Silas returned to the belfry at midnight, carrying a sensitive audio spectrometer to measure any residual sonic frequencies trapped within the stone chamber. As he reached the top of the spiral staircase, the heavy oak door of the belfry swung open on its own, revealing an interior bathed in a pale, phosphorescent moonlight. The silver bell hung motionless from its heavy oak beam, but its bronze clapper was swinging back and forth in a frantic, silent rhythm. Silas set up his spectrometer on a wooden tripod, watching the digital screen display a chaotic wave of ultrasonic frequencies that exceeded human hearing by several megahertz. Suddenly, the silent clapper struck the rim with an impact so violent that it cracked the stone floor beneath the belfry, sending a shockwave of absolute silence rippling across the entire island.
Rusted Ropes
Examining the bell’s rigging, Silas noticed that the thick hemp ropes used to hoist the clapper were completely rotted and covered in a thick, grey mold that pulsed with a slow, rhythmic heartbeat. When he reached out to touch the mold, it dissolved into a cloud of fine, metallic dust that settled on his skin like freezing frost. The air in the belfry grew bitterly cold, and the frosted windows revealed that the ocean below had completely vanished, replaced by an endless expanse of grey fog that stretched in every direction. From within the interior of the silver bell, a soft, muffled sobbing sound began to emanate, growing louder and more distinct with every passing second until it resembled the voice of a drowning man gasping for air.
