Episode 08: The Ocean of Endless Blue

Aboard the research airship Albatross II, cruising smoothly across the boundless, sun-drenched expanse of the upper tropical stratosphere, marine-aeronautic biologist Dr. Alistair Vance leaned over the open observation well in the floor of the main laboratory. Beneath the ship, stretching out to every horizon, was an endless, shimmering ocean of blue air—a dense, liquid-like stratum of the upper atmosphere where schools of bioluminescent sky-whales and winged manta-rays swam through the trade winds as if navigating a deep-sea trench. Alistair was conducting a comprehensive ecological survey of upper-atmosphere fauna, documenting how the strange meteorological shifts were altering migration patterns across the globe. His assistant, a brilliant young zoologist named Mara, hurried into the lab holding a biological sample container filled with glowing, iridescent plankton scooped from the air stream. “Dr. Vance, look at the genetic sequencing results from the plankton samples,” Mara said urgently, placing the digital slate on the worktable. “These organisms aren’t native to our atmosphere. Their cellular structure matches deep-sea marine life from oceanic trenches that haven’t existed for ten thousand years.” Before Alistair could reply, the ship’s warning klaxons blared to life as the altimeter plummeted fifty feet in a single second, caught in a massive downward vortex pulled open by a colossal sky-whale passing beneath their keel.

The Feather From the Upper Reaches

In the quiet, high-altitude outpost of Cloud-Reach, located on the precipice of the northern rim, master archivist and curator Dorian Thorne examined a strange artifact resting inside a glass specimen case upon his mahogany desk. The object was a single, gigantic bird feather—nearly six feet in length—exhibiting iridescent plumage that shifted through every color of the spectrum under changing light. The feather had been recovered by a high-altitude mountaineer from the unexplored upper stratosphere, far above the altitude where ordinary birds could survive. Dorian was preparing the artifact for exhibition when his study door pushed open, and a breathless courier handed him a priority dispatch from the royal academy in Meridian City. “The academy wants immediate custody of the feather, Dorian,” the courier gasped, leaning against the doorframe to catch his breath. “They’re claiming it’s not biological. They say it’s a structural component of an ancient atmospheric probe deployed during the pre-cataclysm sky wars.” Dorian looked back down at the glass case, watching in absolute astonishment as the iridescent barbs of the feather began to uncurl and vibrate on their own accord, emitting a soft, musical humming sound that synchronized with the ticking of his grandfather’s grandfather clock.
