Episode 2: Windless Nights

The following week, the weather turned unseasonably warm and dead calm, yet the wind chimes on the porch grew increasingly frantic in their movements. The brass tubes swung violently back and forth, producing a deafening cacophony that rattled the windowpanes of the cottage and kept Clara awake for hours. When she went outside with heavy leather gardening gloves to take the chimes down from their hook, the metal was radiating an intense, unnatural heat that scorched the leather and blistered her fingertips. As her hand touched the central tube, the chimes instantly fell silent, and a heavy, suffocating fog rolled in from the ocean, blanketing the porch in a dense, grey shroud.

Familiar Voices

As Clara stood on the fog-shrouded porch, the whispering voices emerging from the brass tubes grew loud enough to be heard clearly without the recorder. The voices were not foreign; they belonged to deceased members of her family—her grandfather, her aunt, and her childhood friends—recalling intimate conversations and private memories from decades past. However, the tone of the voices shifted from nostalgic warmth to cold, desperate warnings, begging her to leave the cottage before midnight. Clara tried to unhook the brass fixture from the ceiling beam, but the metal ring had fused seamlessly to the iron bracket, as if the chimes and the structure of the house had become permanently welded together.
