Episode 1: The Unlit Wick

Coastal warden Caleb Stone hauled himself up the spiral stone stairs of the Storm Point lighthouse, his boots echoing sharply against the damp masonry walls. It was the foggiest night of the maritime season, a thick, milky shroud clinging to the razor-sharp sea cliffs and swallowing the crashing waves below. He reached the lantern room at the summit, only to find the beacon atop Storm Point lighthouse dead on the foggiest night of the maritime season. The massive Fresnel glass lens sat dark and cold, casting no guiding light across the treacherous offshore shoals where countless ships had met their doom over the centuries. Caleb rushed to the fuel valve, spinning the brass handle, but heard only a hollow hiss of air instead of the steady flow of kerosene. Someone had deliberately drained the fuel reservoirs and smashed the ignition pilot light, plunging the treacherous coastline into pitch-black peril. He pulled his heavy-duty flashlight from his belt, sweeping the beam across the circular room and spotting a freshly shattered lock on the oil pantry door. The case of the midnight lantern had begun, setting the coastal warden on a desperate mission to restore the beacon before an approaching passenger steamer piled onto the rocks.

 Coastal Shadows

Stepping out onto the windy exterior observation gallery of the lighthouse, Caleb scanned the churning black waters and jagged cliffs below. Smuggling signals flashed from the cliffs below indicate that the blackout was deliberately timed to guide a contraband vessel ashore. A series of quick, rhythmic red and green flashes blinked from a hidden sea cave at the base of the cliffs, communicating safe passage through the outer reef channels to an unseen ship lurking in the fog. Caleb realized the lighthouse blackout was not a random act of vandalism, but a calculated criminal conspiracy orchestrated by local smugglers moving illegal arms and cargo. He sprinted back inside the tower, grabbing his heavy canvas storm coat, a pair of binoculars, and his service revolver before charging down the spiral stairs toward the cliffside trail. The wind howled furiously around the stone tower like a pack of starving wolves, testing his nerve as he prepared to navigate the perilous descent in total darkness.
