The Case of the Midnight Lantern
Episode 4: The Cliffside Trail
Caleb Stone navigated treacherous razor-sharp sea cliffs in gale-force winds to intercept a lookout operating an electric signaling lantern near the cave mouth. The lookout, a burly smuggler wrapped in a heavy oilskin slicker, was frantically flashing green lights toward the fog-shrouded ocean horizon. Caleb crept silently along the slippery rock ledge, using the thunderous roar of the surf to mask his footsteps until he was within striking distance. As the lookout turned to adjust his lantern batteries, Caleb lunged forward, tackling him hard against the jagged rock wall and disarming his hunting knife. A fierce struggle ensued on the wet cliff ledge, bodies slipping and sliding against the wet stone as the smuggler fought desperately to break free. With a decisive sweep of his leg, Caleb tripped the smuggler, pinning him to the ledge and snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
Lantern Light
With the lookout secured, Caleb grabbed the heavy electric signaling lantern, realizing the primary lighthouse beacon was still several minutes away from full operating pressure. Disarming the lookout, Caleb repurposes the portable lantern to warn an approaching passenger steamer away from the reef. He climbed to the highest vantage point of the headland cliff, flashing a rapid series of emergency warning signals directly toward the ominous dark shape looming in the fog. Out on the water, the massive passenger steamer’s horn bellowed a deep, resonant blast of acknowledgement as its captain altered course away from the jagged shoals. The quick thinking and prompt action had averted a catastrophic maritime disaster, saving hundreds of innocent lives from the smuggler’s trap. Caleb breathed a massive sigh of relief, watching the steamer glide safely past the outer reef into the open deep-water channel.
