Episode 2: Mechanical Gears

Trapped in the rotating lantern room, Julian watched the dry horizon outside where the ocean had completely vanished, replaced by an endless desert of grey silt and stranded marine life. The air grew bitterly cold, and frost crystallized across the interior glass of the lantern windows in intricate, clockwork patterns. The massive brass gears in the room clicked and hissed, releasing clouds of steam and oil that smelled intensely of ancient salt and rotting fish. Among the machinery, small metallic spiders made of clock springs and gears scuttled across the floorboards, repairing the turning cogs with surgical precision.

Turning Backward

The tide-indicator clock on the wall struck thirteen times, its heavy bronze bell tolling a mournful note that vibrated through Julian’s chest and caused his vision to blur. Outside, the dry seabed began to reverse its motion once more, but instead of water returning, a massive wall of liquid silver fog rolled across the empty basin, swallowing the stranded shipwrecks and racing up the cliff toward the base of the lighthouse. The fog carried the muffled sounds of human voices, church bells, and distant foghorns echoing from a past era before the town of Ravenwood was even founded.
