The Confrontation
Episode 2: Family History
“Why, Uncle Dorian? Why build a monster like this?” Arthur demanded, stepping closer to the console while keeping a wary distance from his uncle. “Our family has lived in this valley for generations with respect and honor—how did you become the jailer of our entire city?” Dorian sighed softly, his shoulders dropping slightly as a look of distant memory crossed his weathered features. “Honor doesn’t keep the floods from swallowing the lower districts, Arthur, and respect doesn’t stop corrupt municipal cartels from poisoning the water supply,” Dorian replied quietly, stepping slowly toward the edge of the console. “Your grandfather built the physical dams that held back the river, but I realized long ago that physical walls aren’t enough to protect a fragile society from its own internal destructive impulses.” He tapped the metal surface of the console with his cane. “We needed a psychological dam—a system that could predict human greed, malice, and systemic failure before they erupted into societal collapse.”
Building the Network
Dorian began to recount the history of the project, explaining how he and a small group of idealistic engineers had quietly initiated the surveillance network during the chaotic industrial restructuring of the early 1990s. Initially, the system was designed merely to monitor municipal infrastructure stress and predict structural failures in the old canal and drainage systems. However, as political corruption and corporate negligence threatened to bankrupt the city, the engineers expanded the algorithms to monitor financial transactions, political communications, and administrative decision-making. “We caught the city council taking bribes to dump industrial waste into the northern reservoirs, and we neutralized them quietly without a single drop of public bloodshed,” Dorian said, pride evident in his steady gaze. “We saved this city from economic and environmental ruin, Arthur, using the very data streams you now hold in your hand.” Arthur listened in stunned silence, realizing that the network had been born out of a genuine desire to protect the community, even as it metastasized into an absolute totalitarian apparatus.
