The Confrontation
Episode 3: Dorian’s Smile
Despite the gravity of the confrontation, a faint, melancholy smile touched Dorian’s lips as he looked at his nephew standing across the console. “You have your mother’s stubborn integrity, Arthur—she asked the exact same difficult questions when she helped me design the early data routing protocols decades ago,” Dorian reminisced softly. “She eventually chose to retreat to Blackwood Manor to live a quiet life of botanical research, leaving me here to bear the crushing weight of maintaining the machine.” Arthur felt a sudden pang of emotional resonance at the mention of his mother, remembering her quiet dignity and the mysterious locked attic filled with secret research. “She didn’t abandon your cause, Dorian—she tried to warn me about it through her coded journals and hidden archives,” Arthur countered, raising his voice slightly over the hum of the server racks. “She knew that absolute safety achieved through absolute deception is just another form of tyranny, no matter how noble the original intentions might have been.”
Shutting It Down
“Noble or not, the time for the machine has passed, Dorian—it’s time to shut it down and let the people of Ironbridge face the truth of their own world,” Arthur declared with unwavering resolve. Without hesitation, he walked up to the master control console, raised the solid-state drive, and prepared to insert it into the primary system override port to initiate a total core wipe. Dorian did not lunge forward to stop him, nor did he draw a weapon; instead, he simply raised his hand and pressed a single emergency lockdown toggle switch mounted on the side of his walking cane. With a deafening mechanical clunk, heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the exterior access doors, and the glowing status lights across the entire control room shifted from operational green to a harsh, warning amber. “If you execute that override command, Arthur, you won’t just shut down the surveillance network—you will disable the primary automated floodgates and seismic stabilization dampeners across the entire valley,” Dorian warned coldly.
