Episode 1: The Late Arrival

Architectural historian Julian Vance checked into the grand, isolated St. Jude Hotel in the Scottish Highlands late on a rainy autumn evening, seeking a quiet retreat to complete his manuscript on Gothic interior design. Desk clerk Clara handed him an old-fashioned brass key for Room 402 on the top floor, warning him with a nervous smile that the fourth floor was rarely occupied due to its peculiar acoustics. Julian took his leather suitcase and rode the creaking, cage-like elevator up to the fourth floor, stepping out into a long, dimly lit carpeted corridor lined with mahogany doors. As he walked toward his room, he distinctly heard a pair of heavy, measured footsteps pacing on the bare hardwood floor directly above him—the fifth-floor attic space that was supposed to be strictly sealed off and vacant.

 Pacing the Upper Hall

Unpacking his laptop and reference books in Room 402, Julian tried to focus on his writing, but the pacing footsteps on the ceiling above continued with relentless, metronomic precision. The steps marched from the western end of the hallway to the eastern wall, paused for exactly three seconds, and then reversed their course, repeating the cycle without a single deviation. Irritated by the noise, Julian called the front desk to complain about noisy guests in the attic, but Clara informed him in a strained whisper that no guests or staff were permitted on the fifth floor, as the ceiling joists had been structurally condemned following a fire in nineteen-forty. Hanging up the phone, Julian listened closer and realized the footsteps were not pacing at random; they were spelling out a rhythmic tapping pattern in Morse code.
