The Corridor of Footsteps
Episode 2: The Locked Room
Determined to investigate the source of the disturbance, Julian found a service staircase at the end of the fourth-floor corridor leading up to the attic. The heavy iron fire door at the top was secured with a massive modern padlock and a chain bearing a municipal condemnation notice. However, the padlock was unlocked, hanging loosely from the rusted hasp as if someone had just exited through the door moments before his arrival. Julian pushed the heavy iron door open, stepping into a vast, dust-filled attic lit by shafts of moonlight piercing through cracked slate tiles. The floor was covered in a thick blanket of undisturbed dust, stretching from wall to wall without a single footprint marring its pristine surface—despite the heavy footsteps continuing to march directly above his head.
Dust and Time
Julian stepped cautiously onto the attic floor, his boots leaving deep tracks in the gray dust as he swept his flashlight beam across the cavernous space. Piled against the brick walls were discarded Victorian furniture frames, old steamer trunks, and dozens of framed oil portraits covered in white sheets. As he moved deeper into the attic, the pacing footsteps abruptly stopped, replaced by the sound of a heavy wooden chair dragging across the floorboards just around the corner. Julian raised his flashlight, but the beam illuminated only an empty rocking chair sitting beside a brick chimney stack. When he looked back at the path he had walked, his own footprints in the dust were slowly filling in from behind, as if invisible feet were erasing his trail step by step.
