Episode 1: Unannounced Visit

In the quiet artistic enclave of Thornfield, master horologist Dorian Vance sat at his workbench repairing an intricate seventeenth-century skeleton clock. The workshop was illuminated by the warm, focused beam of an adjustable brass desk lamp, casting intricate gear shadows across the walls. Outside, a gentle autumn drizzle tapped against the leaded windowpanes, creating a soothing backdrop of ambient white noise. Suddenly, the brass chime above the workshop door rang out sharply, signaling an unannounced visitor stepping in from the rainy street. Dorian looked up from his jeweler’s loupe, blinking against the sudden transition in light as a tall, cloaked figure entered the room. The visitor shook the moisture from his dark woolen overcoat, revealing the sharp, austere features of a man in his late fifties whom Dorian recognized instantly. It was Julian Vane, his estranged brother and a senior investigator for the metropolitan insurance bureau, whom he hadn’t spoken to in over five years. Julian did not offer a polite greeting; instead, he walked straight over to the workbench, placing a tarnished silver pocket watch down beside the skeleton clock. The pocket watch was completely smashed, its crystal face spiderwebbed with cracks and its hands frozen permanently at 11:42.

 Dorian’s Return

“I didn’t expect to see you in Thornfield, Julian, especially not carrying antique scrap metal,” Dorian said, adjusting his spectacles while maintaining a calm, guarded demeanor. Julian pulled up a wooden stool, sitting down heavily as he wiped condensation from his glasses with a silk handkerchief. “This watch belonged to our late uncle, Arthur Vance, who was found dead in his study under highly suspicious circumstances last night,” Julian stated grimly, his voice tight with suppressed emotion. “The local police ruled it a sudden heart attack, but I found this watch half-sunk in the mud beneath his study window, and the timing mechanism has been deliberately sabotaged.” Dorian’s hands froze over the workbench; Uncle Arthur had been his primary mentor in horology, teaching him the delicate art of escapement calibration and gear tooth profiling. “Why bring it to me? You know I left the bureau years ago to get away from your endless investigations,” Dorian replied, feeling a familiar knot of resentment tighten in his chest. Julian slid the broken watch closer to Dorian’s magnifying lamp, revealing tiny scratch marks etched along the inner brass casing that formed a microscopic numerical sequence. “Because those scratches aren’t random impact damage, Dorian—they are a coded message written in the specific workshop shorthand that only you and Arthur ever used.”
