Episode 4: Suspicious Timing

Trapped in the ground-floor chamber with the single exit bolted from above, Dorian assessed the room’s structural layout for alternative escape routes or tactical advantages. He noticed that the massive diesel generator was connected to a series of heavy copper cables running upward through the ceiling into the old lantern mechanism. “The generator is rigged to an incendiary timer,” Dorian realized, spotting a digital detonator attached to the fuel intake valve with flashing red numbers counting down. The timer had less than four minutes remaining before it would ignite the diesel fuel and engulf the entire stone tower in flames. Julian drew his revolver, firing two precise shots into the mechanical locking mechanism of the upper stairwell door, shattering the rusted latch with a deafening report. “Get Lyra out through the service door to the cliffs!” Julian ordered, charging up the spiraling stone steps toward the upper gallery with fearless determination. Dorian hesitated for a split second, torn between fleeing with his apprentice and backing up his brother against unseen adversaries. Seeing the countdown timer tick down past the two-minute mark, he grabbed Lyra’s hand and pulled her toward the exterior exit as smoke began to billow from the generator vents.

 The Visitor’s Intent

As Dorian and Lyra scrambled out onto the rocky cliff path, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the crumbling boathouse, blocking their escape route with a leveled hunting rifle. It was the municipal harbor master, a man who had supplied timber and metal parts to Dorian’s workshop for over a decade. “Drop the bag, Dorian,” the harbor master commanded, his voice cold and steady against the howling wind off the North Sea. “The chronometers belong to the syndicate, and your brother’s little investigation ends right here tonight.” Dorian slowly lowered his leather tool bag, keeping his hand inside the pouch near a heavy brass machinist’s hammer. Instead of complying with the demand to surrender, he hurled a heavy wrench from his pocket directly at the harbor master’s face, buying a crucial moment of distraction. The rifle discharge went wide, shattering a boulder behind them as Lyra tackled the harbor master around the knees, sending them both tumbling into the soft gorse bushes beside the path. Dorian vaulted forward, bringing the heavy machinist’s hammer down in a swift arc to disarm the assailant before pinning him against the damp earth.
