Episode 3: The Faded Wick

Shaken but unharmed, Barnaby hurried back to the central beacon station to check the primary flame level. To his horror, the beacon’s golden light had dimmed to a sickly, pale yellow flicker. He rushed to the fuel intake valve, discovering that the contaminated oil from the depot had fouled the burner nozzle. The ceramic wick was choked with a hardened, tar-like crust that prevented proper fuel absorption. He grabbed his iron wrench and wire brush, working frantically to dismantle the burner assembly in the freezing wind. If the flame went out completely, the creatures of the abyss would scale the canyon walls unchecked within minutes. His fingers grew numb with cold as he scraped away the black residue from the delicate brass components. He dropped a new cotton wick into the assembly, pouring pure, uncontaminated emergency oil from his private reserve. He struck his flint once, twice, three times, but the damp wind blew the nascent spark out immediately. Sweat beaded on his forehead despite the freezing temperature as he built a windbreak with his own body. On the fourth strike, a tiny blue flame caught the edge of the wick and held firm, growing brighter. The beacon flared back to life, casting a warm, protective barrier across the span of the suspension bridge.

 Watchers of the Trench

With the primary beacon secured, Barnaby reviewed the logbooks to trace the delivery chain of the corrupted oil shipments. The ledgers pointed directly to Master Hauer, the chief trade magistrate of the upper canyon settlement. Hauer had recently authorized budget cuts for the oil refineries, importing cheap fuel from unvetted underground sources. Barnaby crossed the suspension bridge and made his way up the steep stone switchbacks toward the magistrate’s administrative office. The administrative building was a lavish stone structure perched on the sunlit upper rim of the canyon. Guards stood outside the arched double doors, wearing polished silver breastplates that contrasted sharply with Barnaby’s soot-stained cloak. “State your business, keeper,” the lead guard demanded, barring the entrance with a heavy halberd. “I need to speak with Magistrate Hauer regarding compromised fuel endangering the canyon beacons,” Barnaby stated firmly. The guard sneered, looking down his nose at Barnaby’s humble appearance and oil-stained hands. “The magistrate is busy auditing trade tariffs and will not be disturbed by low-level maintenance staff,” the guard replied coldly. Barnaby did not argue; instead, he reached into his satchel and pulled out the shattered glass vial etched by the black sludge. He smashed the vial against the stone steps, releasing a cloud of sulfurous vapor that smelled of the abyss. The guards coughed, stepping back in alarm as Barnaby pushed past them through the open doors.
