Episode 4: The Unlit Tunnel

Barnaby strode down the opulent hallway of the administrative office, ignoring the shouts of pursuit echoing behind him. He kicked open the heavy mahogany doors of Hauer’s private study, surprising the magistrate mid-conversation with a merchant. Hauer stood up behind his carved oak desk, his face flushing with anger at the unauthorized intrusion. “What is the meaning of this insolence, keeper?” Hauer shouted, adjusting his silk collar with trembling fingers. “You are trading contaminated fuel to line your pockets, Hauer, and it’s starving the canyon beacons of pure flame,” Barnaby accused. Hauer’s expression flickered with panic for a split second before he regained his smug, composed demeanor. “You have no proof of such reckless allegations, keeper; show me an official audit or leave,” Hauer sneered dismissively. Barnaby stepped forward, slamming his logbook down onto the desk right over the magistrate’s financial ledgers. “The proof is down in the lower depot right now, rotting in vats you purchased from the unmapped lower tunnels,” Barnaby said. The merchant standing nearby turned pale, grabbing his coat and rushing out of the room without another word. Hauer realized his conspiracy had unraveled, and his hand slipped toward a small silver bell on his desk. Before the magistrate could ring for guards, Barnaby pinned the magistrate’s hand to the wood with steady pressure. “Your trade syndicate is finished, Hauer,” Barnaby whispered.

 Sparks in the Chasm

Stripped of his office and facing trial by the canyon council, Hauer was removed from the administrative district under guard. The supply lines were restored to reputable refineries, bringing pure, high-grade whale oil back to the beacon stations. Barnaby returned to his routine duties atop the canyon cliff, ensuring every flame burned with fierce intensity. However, during his nightly rounds, he noticed something strange occurring deep within the Great Void of Alreth. The violet eyes he had seen earlier were multiplying, forming a massive glowing cluster along the lower canyon floor. Thousands of abyssal creatures were gathering in unison, singing a low, discordant note that vibrated through the stone. Barnaby ran back to his station, checking the fuel levels and adjusting the primary reflectors to maximum magnification. The beam of light pierced the darkness, illuminating a colossal structure rising from the center of the void floor. It was an ancient, forgotten beacon tower built by the original founders of the canyon civilization. The creatures were not preparing to attack the settlement; they were trying to relight their own long-extinguished tower. Barnaby realized that the abyss had its own keepers, and the darkness was not merely a threat, but a separate world waiting for light.
