Episode 4: Amplified Fear

Toby dropped his backpack to the concrete floor and reached out to grab the heavy locking wheel of the vault door, feeling the freezing metal bite into his bare palms. He applied steady rotational force, but the mechanism was jammed tight by decades of corrosion and internal pressure differentials. “The air inside isn’t running out because of a timer, Toby—it’s running out because I opened the purge valve,” the voice echoed from the radio speaker, taking on a familiar, mocking cadence that made his blood run cold. Toby paused, recognizing the inflection instantly—it was Marcus Thorne, his former business partner who had vanished two years ago following an embezzlement scandal at their audio engineering firm. “Marcus? What kind of sick game are you playing?” Toby shouted into the empty freezing chamber, his voice bouncing off the frost-covered concrete walls. “It’s not a game, old friend; it’s an audition,” Marcus’s voice replied smoothly from the speaker. “The firm stole my life’s work, and now you get to decide whether you want to save me or let the past stay buried in the ice.”

 Static and Breath

Instead of playing into Marcus’s psychological trap, Toby ignored the radio speaker entirely and pulled his heavy steel crowbar from his backpack. He wedged the tip of the crowbar into the seal of the vault door, using a hydraulic floor jack he found nearby to create massive mechanical leverage against the locking frame. The metal groaned in protest, shrieking loudly as the pressure seal began to fracture with a shower of rusted frost flakes. “You’re wasting your time, Toby! The pressure will crush the inner chamber if you force it!” Marcus screamed over the radio, his calm facade finally shattering into genuine panic as the audio feed filled with violent banging sounds. Toby pumped the hydraulic jack handle with relentless determination, ignoring the biting cold and the burning fatigue in his arms. With a deafening thunderclap that echoed through the entire warehouse, the vacuum seal broke, and the heavy vault door swung outward, sending a massive plume of white condensation billowing across the floor.
