Episode 2: Water and Metal

Shining his high-lumen flashlight into the gaping maw of the drainage conduit, Caleb stepped cautiously across the threshold onto the slick brick flooring of the subterranean tunnel. The walls were weeping moisture, and thick calcified mineral deposits formed bizarre stalactites hanging from the vaulted brick ceiling overhead. He followed the exposed water pipes as they wound deeper into the subterranean network beneath the city streets, away from the foundations of the tenement building. Every few yards, he noticed fresh scratch marks on the pipe insulation, indicating that someone had been recently climbing along the infrastructure using the mounting brackets as handholds. The tapping sound resumed ahead, sharper and more urgent now, echoing down the long brick corridor like rhythmic drumbeats in a hollow cavern. Caleb gripped his heavy metal flashlight like a club, his heart hammering against his ribs as he rounded a sharp ninety-degree bend in the tunnel. Before him stood a massive cast-iron junction valve, completely covered in strange geometric carvings that had been freshly chiseled into the oxidized metal surface. Beside the valve sat a small, water-resistant canvas satchel bearing an embossed municipal seal identical to the one Caleb used in his drafting office.

 The Hidden Block

Approaching the carved junction valve, Caleb examined the strange geometric markings with his flashlight beam, realizing they were detailed architectural symbols corresponding to a hidden subterranean chamber beneath the city’s central square. He unzipped the canvas satchel, finding a collection of heavy brass leveling blocks, a surveyor’s plumb bob, and a rolled-up set of original Victorian engineering blueprints. Unrolling the blueprints on a dry patch of brickwork, he saw that they charted a secret lower tier of stormwater tunnels that had been officially sealed off following a catastrophic structural collapse in 1894. According to the notes scrawled in the margins—written in his own firm’s distinct drafting handwriting—the tunnels were designed to divert floodwaters away from a subterranean vault containing the city’s original land deeds and tax reserves. Someone was systematically tampering with the structural stabilization blocks in that sealed vault, risking a massive sinkhole collapse that could swallow the entire central commercial district. The midnight visitor wasn’t a ghost or a random vagrant; it was an active structural saboteur using the city’s water infrastructure as a covert highway beneath the streets.
