Episode 3: Carved Wood

As Caleb packed the blueprints back into the canvas satchel, his flashlight beam caught a small wooden object wedged between the iron mounting brackets of the water pipe. He reached down and pulled it free, wiping away the wet grime to inspect the item in the harsh white light. It was a hand-carved wooden puzzle box, intricately fashioned from dark walnut wood and decorated with inlaid brass geometric patterns that matched the carvings on the junction valve. He turned the box in his hands, noticing a small sliding panel on the base secured by a tiny wooden pin. Pressing the pin inward, the panel slid open smoothly, revealing a folded piece of heavy rag paper tucked inside the hollow interior. Caleb unfolded the paper, reading the handwritten message inscribed in neat, precise ink strokes: “The foundations of Millfield are built upon lies. The water remembers what the council tried to drown.” Below the message was a specific set of basement coordinates pointing directly to the sub-level archives of the municipal planning department—the very office where Caleb worked every day drafting modern urban renewal plans.

 Pipe Junction Clues

Determined to uncover who had left the carved wooden puzzle box in the drainage conduit, Caleb retraced his steps through the damp tunnels back to the tenement utility alcove. He secured the iron access panel with the damaged padlock, slipping the wooden puzzle box and the blueprints safely into his backpack before returning to his basement flat. Working under the bright illumination of his desk lamp, he cross-referenced the coordinates from the rag paper note with the digital property databases on his workstation. The coordinates pointed to a restricted sub-level storage room beneath the planning department—a room that had been officially listed as empty and structurally compromised for over a decade. Caleb pulled up the original architectural specifications for the storage room, discovering that it shared a common brick partition wall with the city’s historic underground vault system. Someone had been tunneling through the old brickwork from inside the supposedly empty storage room, using the municipal water infrastructure to transport excavated rubble out through the drainage conduits. The saboteur wasn’t trying to destroy the city; they were attempting to break into the sealed 1894 vault to retrieve something hidden away by the founding fathers.
